Spotted: Former student Micha Huigen draws for The New Yorker and The Washington Post

He already made illustrations for the Volkskrant and a major newspaper in Sweden. Illustrator Micha Huigen was working from his studio, until he suddenly received an email from America. Whether he wanted to draw something for the famous magazine The New Yorker. To top it off, a week later The Washington Post followed. The Stentor interviewed the former Illustration Design student about his American adventure.

"Joe Biden opening the newspaper in the White House and seeing my drawing, I can arrive in Den Ham with that," Micha Huigen says in the interview. For The Washington Post, he drew an illustration for the cover of the arts appendix. In it, he portrayed six art categories: opera, classical music, film, pop music, theater and TV. "It's impossible to see everything at a glance, you really have to look at it," the former ArtEZ student explained.

His "American dream" began with an email from The New Yorker magazine. Whether he wanted to draw an illustration to accompany the story of the writer Franz Kafka. A few weeks later, he saw his work featured in one of the most famous magazines in the world. That shortly thereafter The Washington Post asked him to draw the cover for its art appendix was entirely a dream come true for Micha. "They wanted something with bright colors," he explains. "That deviated from what I normally make. From the sketches I sent in, one was eventually chosen."

He has only been in the business for five years and works very hard to bring his work to the attention of the public. From his studio in Zwolle he is steadily building up his portfolio.
