History

The ArtEZ University of Arts came into being as a result of the merger between various independent art schools in the east of the Netherlands. Staff member Frits Ferres came up with the name ArtEZ. The capital letters stand for the cities in which ArtEZ is located: Arnhem, Enschede and Zwolle.

ArtEZ became a reality in 2002. From then on, the Arnhem University of the Arts (HKA), Constantijn Huygens in Kampen/Zwolle, and the Academy of Art and Industry (AKI) in Enschede formally joined forces to collectively strengthen art education in the east of the Netherlands. In May 2006, the Enschede Academy of Music of Saxion Universities of Applied Sciences became part of ArtEZ.
